Timeline

Every meeting on record

One-to-one meeting and discussion is an important act in accomplishing tasks — it builds the networking that governance depends on.

Decarbonisation is a governance problem before it is an engineering one

Policy work sits on four commitments: sustained renewable capacity addition, lower hydrogen and battery costs with carbon pricing and monitoring behind them, a nationwide EV charging rollout, and sustainable practice in agriculture.

Renewable capacity

Continuous increase of renewable capacity addition.

Hydrogen and carbon pricing

Policies to reduce hydrogen costs, with carbon pricing and monitoring put in place.

Batteries and EV charging

Drive down battery and green hydrogen costs, with a nationwide EV charging rollout.

Sustainable agriculture

Educating farmers and driving adoption of sustainable practices in agriculture.

The route runs through the UNFCCC

Decarbonisation is an essential factor in achieving the goals of the UNFCCC, and it is measured with two quantitative tools: Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the targets each country sets for itself, and the Global Stocktake (GST), the periodic check on whether those targets add up.

A century of burning fossil fuels has disrupted the Earth's energy balance. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and ocean has risen steadily for decades, and it traps extra heat near the surface, so temperatures rise.

Scientists also warn of the other direction: if carbon dioxide were removed altogether, the terrestrial greenhouse effect would collapse and the surface would cool by roughly 33°C. The aim is balance, not elimination.

Carbon credits
A tradable certificate for one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent avoided or removed, used to put a price on emission and fund reductions.
Carbon emission
India's per-capita emissions are low at 1.8 tonnes of CO₂, yet it is the third-largest emitter globally, releasing a net 2.9 GtCO₂e a year as of 2019.
Greenhouse gases
Carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons and water vapour.
Measure
India's decarbonisation path creates 287 gigatons of carbon space for the world, almost half the global budget for limiting warming to 1.5°C.
2.9 GtCO₂e

India's net annual emissions as of 2019 — third-largest globally, despite per-capita emissions of only 1.8 tonnes.

70%

Share of Indian emissions driven by six sectors: power, steel, automotive, aviation, cement and agriculture.

287 Gt

Carbon space India's decarbonisation path could create for the world — close to half the global budget for holding warming to 1.5°C.

11.8 → 1.9

GtCO₂e a year by 2070 under the current line-of-sight scenario: a 90 percent cut in economic emissions intensity against 2019.

₹3,400/ha

Additional annual farmer income from sustainable farming under that scenario, rising to ₹4,800 in the accelerated case — a path that could also save $1.7 trillion in foreign exchange.

420 ppm

Atmospheric CO₂ today. For 800,000 years before the industrial revolution it never rose above 300 ppm.

33°C

The drop in Earth's surface temperature scientists estimate would follow if the terrestrial greenhouse effect collapsed entirely.

43%

The cut in global emissions the global stocktake says is needed by 2030 against 2019 levels to hold warming to 1.5°C — a pace the parties are currently off track on.

Industry-specific focus

Inside India, about 70 percent of emissions come from six sectors. Decarbonisation effort has to be concentrated where those emissions are produced.

  • Power
  • Steel
  • Automotive
  • Aviation
  • Cement
  • Agriculture

Line of sight to 2070

In the current line-of-sight (LOS) scenario, India could reduce annual emissions from a historical trajectory of 11.8 GtCO₂e to 1.9 GtCO₂e by 2070. That is a 90 percent reduction in economic emissions intensity compared with 2019.

Historical trajectory
11.8
Line of sight, 2070
1.9

Annual emissions, GtCO₂e

Sustainable farming pays the farmer

Sustainable-farming practices could generate additional farmer income in both scenarios, and over the transition India may save a cumulative $1.7 trillion in foreign exchange.

₹4,800per hectare a year, accelerated scenario

Environmental governance for redesigns, remodels and improvements

The commitment is to the environment, with a prime focus on carbon emission and carbon sink, so that greenhouse gas levels are managed properly across a wide variety of projects.

Green buildings

Design, remodel and operate buildings so that energy and material use fall at the source.

Infrastructure aided by carbon sink

Plan infrastructure so that it absorbs and stores carbon rather than only emitting it.

Balanced greenhouse gases

Hold greenhouse gases at a level that keeps climate management sustainable.

Design

CCUS hubs where emission is concentrated

Evaluate carbon capture, usage and storage hubs across Indian states with the largest emitting production, structured as public–private partnerships for the storage of captured carbon.

Plan

A national circularity mission

Recycling hubs in the top twenty Indian cities, which together contribute 35 percent of municipal solid waste.

Renew

Mandates with teeth

Targets on recycling rates, blending norms for recycled raw material, and landfill levies that make the alternative expensive.

Evaluating the continual process: the global stocktake

43%

cut in global greenhouse gas emissions needed by 2030, against 2019 levels, to limit warming to 1.5°C. The stocktake notes that parties are off track on their Paris Agreement goals.

  • Triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency improvements by 2030.
  • Accelerate the phase-down of unabated coal power.
  • Phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, along with other measures that move energy systems away from fossil fuels.
  • A just, orderly and equitable transition, with developed countries continuing to take the lead.
  • Ambitious economy-wide targets covering all greenhouse gases and sectors, aligned with 1.5°C, in the next round of NDCs, which parties were asked to submit by early 2025.

Credentials on record

Each card opens the certificate itself, hosted on the official site. A certificate documents that its holder is licensed or authorised to practise a chosen domain — fittingly, the word traces back to the Latin certus: "sure, fixed, settled."
